The right client depends on deployment, identity, terminal breadth, workstation integration, and presentation requirements. This guide compares those operating concerns without treating browser delivery as an automatic upgrade or understating the maturity of IBM i Access Client Solutions.
The short answer
Choose a browser terminal when central web delivery, application-managed identity, server-side credentials, exact grants, or embedded workflow presentation matters more than desktop integration. Choose a mature desktop emulator when users need broad terminal profiles, printer support, 27 by 132 screens, macros, workstation APIs, or established keyboard customization.
IBM i Access Client Solutions, commonly called ACS, is an IBM client suite rather than a direct equivalent to PristineScreen400. It includes 5250 emulation and other IBM i access functions. A fair evaluation should acknowledge those capabilities instead of treating every access tool as interchangeable.

Who manages the endpoint?
If hundreds of managed desktops already receive ACS and terminal profiles reliably, replacing that process may not create value. If external users, mixed devices, or tightly controlled application entry make client deployment difficult, a browser can simplify the user-facing endpoint.
Who should know the IBM i password?
A server-held grant model can separate the browser user from the IBM i profile used for work. That can help when application access should be revoked centrally or a shared operational profile must not be distributed. It is not the only identity architecture, and established IBM i SSO may be preferable where available.
Which emulator features are non-negotiable?
Inventory printer sessions, display sizes, keyboard maps, macros, multiple sessions, file transfer, data transfer, and workstation APIs. Do not assume a browser terminal supports them because it renders a representative menu correctly.
Is presentation improvement part of the project?
If the goal is only reliable terminal emulation, a mature client may be the lowest-risk choice. If the goal also includes a branded entry or guided high-value workflows, a browser application can provide a controlled presentation layer around the live session.
